Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Chief Assistant Attorney General and administrative direction of the Chief Deputy Attorney General, the Senior Assistant Attorney General plans, organizes, and directs the work of staff including, but not limited to : Deputy Attorney General S upervisors and attorneys working in the Appeals, Writs, and Trials Section in the San Diego Office; professional staff engaged in legislative affairs, legal research, training activities, and other special projects directed at all levels of government; and law enforcement and allied support personnel involved in the investigation and prosecution of criminal activity. Duties also include representing the Attorney General or testifying before the courts, the Legislature, the Governor's Office, other governmental agencies, and the public; advising the Attorney General on matters of crime which should become the subject of investigation and prosecution; and serving as key policy advisor to the Attorney General on legal issues impacting the Department of Justice.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


  1. Practical and working knowledge of trial court and appellate court practices and procedures as they pertain to all forms of non-capital and capital criminal appellate litigation, non-capital and capital habeas corpus litigation, criminal investigations, and criminal trial prosecutions.
  2. Demonstrated leadership ability and experience, planning and supervisory skills.
  3. Ability to interact positively and effectively with district attorneys, sworn and non-sworn law enforcement officials, other state and federal agencies, and other members of the Department of Justice at all levels.
  4. Experience with the coordination of legal work in criminal law for a large staff of attorneys and other technical personnel.
  5. Experience with the development of policy related to the area of criminal law within a large governmental setting.
  6. Knowledge of policies and operating practices of a criminal prosecution agency.
